S’wak govt awards RM500k to Bonnie Bunyau Gustin for powerlifting feat at Paris Para Olympics

KUCHING, Sept 22: The Sarawak government has awarded RM500,000 to powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin for defending his gold medal at the Paris 2024 Para Olympics and breaking his own world record in the process.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he hoped that the reward will serve aa encouragement to para Malaysia Games (Sukma) athletes to train harder for success in the future.

“I also would like to congratulate Bonnie for breaking the world record that makes Malaysia and Sarawak’s names famous in the international sports scene,” he said during the opening ceremony of Para Sukma 2024 streamed live via Sarawak Public Communications Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook page today.

He said that the Sarawak government will also continue to sending local athletes overseas to train.

“This will help to develop potential athletes,” he added.

On Sept 6, Bonnie, 25, set a new world record by lifting 232kg in the men’s 72kg final at the Paris Paralympics, securing Malaysia’s second gold medal of the games. — DayakDaily
