S’wak delegation meets Canadian ministry officials to identify potential collaboration in sustainable mining

KUCHING, June 9: A delegation from Sarawak met with officials from Canada’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation yesterday (June 8) to identify potential areas of collaboration for best practices in sustainable mining.

According to a press release, the meeting which was held in Victoria focused on the policies and regulations involved in sustainable mining to rehabilitate abandoned quarry and mining sites.

The Sarawak delegation was led by Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He said that Canada is renowned as a leading mining nation for the development of its value chain and other related industries.

The mining sector in British Columbia, driven by the private sector, is one of the key economic activities of the province and has since contribute approximately 30 per cent of local economic growth and employed a workforce over 35,000-strong.

“The development of the mining sector is based on the principles of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), which has benefitted the local community while conserving the environment.

“We (Sarawak) are impressed with the collaborative and partnership approaches in addressing the right of the First Nations People, which is the social pillar of ESG principles,” said Awang Tengah.

Among those present were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Development and Natural Resources Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister of Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syaeed Aman Ghazali, and senior government officials.

The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation is in charge of electricity, alternative energy, mining and petroleum resources. It plays a crucial role to support British Columbia’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emission. — DayakDaily
