KUCHING, Nov 1: The Sarawak government confirmed that the discussion between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) on the implementation arrangements under the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 is still ongoing but is expected to be finalised soon.
This update was announced today by the Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, following PETRONAS’ recent clarification on the matter.
PETRONAS’ statement was in response to remarks by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who mentioned that the longstanding dispute had officially been resolved.
Julaihi reaffirmed that despite the ongoing discussions, Petros remains the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak.
“There are no other gas aggregators in Sarawak. The ongoing discussion between PETRONAS and Petros ought to be concluded soonest,” he said in a statement.
The Premier had on Thursday (Oct 31) shared, during a Deepavali visit to Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Dato Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira’s residence, that PETRONAS had agreed in principle for Petros to serve as Sarawak’s sole gas aggregator.
“We will continue our efforts as an aggregator,” he said, adding that while further details are to be discussed, the agreement solidifies Petros’ central role in managing Sarawak’s gas distribution.
He noted that Julaihi had received an informal notice, with an official letter confirming the arrangement to follow.
This development followed the Sarawak government’s three-month deadline, issued on July 28, for PETRONAS to resolve its gas distribution arrangements with Petros.
PETRONAS, in a brief statement, clarified that the ongoing discussions aim to align the interests and objectives of all stakeholders, upholding existing contractual commitments while ensuring continued reliability for investors and customers. — DayakDaily
