KUCHING, Mar 3: Sarawak is advancing its climate governance by implementing reforms recommended in the Subnational Climate Change Institutional Assessment (CCIA) report aimed at strengthening institutional frameworks, policy alignment and long-term risk management, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to him, the CCIA report provides a structured roadmap with actionable recommendations across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons, designed to guide Sarawak’s climate investments, operational planning, and policy implementation.
“Enduring climate solutions are built on strong institutions. It is essential to have clear mandates, legal authority and credible monitoring systems to translate climate ambition into sustained action,” he said during the CCIA report launch at a hotel here today.
Abang Johari highlighted that these institutional reforms are intended to align state-level policies with national and international climate objectives, ensuring coordinated governance across sectors and levels of government. He added that strong institutions enable Sarawak to manage fiscal and environmental risks effectively while supporting sustainable development.
The Premier further emphasised the integration of climate considerations into fiscal and development planning, including revenue systems, conservation incentives, and carbon pricing mechanisms, which are structured to balance environmental stewardship with economic growth.
“These reforms are not limited to administrative adjustments. They are strategic investments in stability, competitiveness, and long-term prosperity for the state and the nation,” he said.
To support this effort, the State has established the Sarawak Climate and Energy Diplomacy Unit which will lead international and regional engagement on climate and energy transition, provide technical advice on major projects and consolidate green technologies to enhance sustainable development.
“Through coordinated policy implementation, institutional clarity, and robust monitoring, Sarawak ensures that climate action continues independently of political cycles, delivering measurable results over time,” he added. — DayakDaily
