KUCHING, Jan 30: Sustainability has been positioned as the central thrust of Sarawak’s development strategy, with the State leveraging clean energy and rapid implementation to drive inclusive and resilient growth under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Abang Johari said Sarawak’s sustainability agenda is underpinned by three key frameworks, the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy, Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint, and Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, which collectively chart the State’s pathway towards a green economy.
He highlighted that the energy sector will act as the main catalyst for Sarawak’s transformation, encompassing efforts to decarbonise the energy industry, expand renewable energy capacity, and develop green hydrogen, thereby strengthening Sarawak’s position as a regional sustainable energy hub.
“Clean energy will not only drive Sarawak’s industries, but also support the energy needs of regional partners. This positions Sarawak as a reliable sustainable energy partner in the ASEAN region,” he said.
The Premier was speaking at the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) Members Celebration Night 2026: The Sarawak Narrative – Driving Leadership in Private Sector Sustainability, held in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (Jan 29).
Abang Johari emphasised that people remain the most critical drivers in ensuring the success of the sustainability agenda.
“Strategies do not move on their own. Policies do not reduce carbon emissions. Plans do not change the supply chain. It is people who make the transformation successful,” he said.
He further stressed that the era of gradual sustainability is over, noting that the world has now entered a critical phase that requires swift, bold and measured action, particularly from the corporate and private sectors.
“The era of gradual sustainability is over. Today we determine how quickly we are ready to act,” he said, adding that the global sustainability agenda has moved beyond discussion and planning to decisive implementation.
At the event, which brought together industry leaders and regional sustainability advocates, Abang Johari was also conferred the Sustainability Visionary Award, in recognition of Sarawak’s leadership in translating green policies into concrete implementation.
He said Sarawak’s achievements were not the result of individual efforts, but the strength of its institutions, supported by credible civil servants and strategic partners committed to ensuring economic development progresses alongside environmental conservation and social well-being.
In a firm message to the business community, he said the awards presented were not merely symbolic, but reflected a growing readiness among Malaysian companies to move beyond pledges towards measurable actions with real impact.
The evening also saw public and private sector organisations recognised for excellence in governance, integrity, social responsibility and environmental conservation.
Also present were Polish Ambassador to Malaysia Krzysztof Dobrowolski, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agency, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and UNGCMYB chief executive officer Faroze Nadar. — DayakDaily
