KUCHING, Sept 28: The remand of a 36-year-old man in connection with a suspected arson-related case involving a convenience store on Jalan Green, Sin Sin Park, here has been extended.
His remand was extended by three days to assist investigations under Section 436 of the Penal Code.
Police first held him at the Sri Aman district police lock-up from Sept 22 to 25 but arrested him again in Saratok the day after his release (Sept 26).
Police then brought him to Kuching, where Inspector Tan Chiang Fook, the investigating officer, sought another remand under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code so the man could help with the Jalan Green probe. Senior Court Registrar Nuraini Ahmad approved a three-day order.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Nureina Syafika Mohd Najib freed a 23-year-old man remanded over the Jalan Green incident from custody today, but police promptly re-arrested him to assist with the Saratok arson investigation. Police first picked him up at a cafe in Sarikei around 9.30pm on Sept 22.
Police also released a 40-year-old suspect in the same case over the weekend.
Investigators are treating the matter under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which deals with mischief by fire or explosives. A conviction carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine.
All suspects are represented by counsel Daniel Ling.
The attacks were reported on Sept 20. One targeted an outlet in Sin Sin Park, Jalan Green, at about 8.30pm, while the other struck a branch in Sri Aman. — DayakDaily
