SUPP Youth backs SDMC’s decision to leave Southern Region out of Phase 3 of NRP

KUCHING, Aug 3: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth supports the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) decision of allowing only the Northern and Central regions to enter Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) starting tomorrow.

Its secretary-general Milton Foo said Sarawak is very sparsely populated, where its land size is almost the same as the whole of Peninsular Malaysia.

Due to its vast size, Sarawak should gradually enter into the third phase of NRP depending on districts and the number of Covid-19 positive cases each district yields daily, he opined.

“[The] decision made should base on districts and it should not be a blanket one across Sarawak.

“For example, for Kuching district, yesterday and today, Kuching still showed three-digit (increase in) positive cases. For me, it is still inappropriate for Kuching to enter into the third phase.

“But districts with single-digit cases could definitely proceed into Phase 3, while districts with double-digit cases may be given consideration to enter Phase 3,” said Foo in a press statement today.

SDMC in its daily update on the the State’s Covid-19 situation today said Sarawak will enter Phase 3 of the NRP starting tomorrow (Aug 4), except for districts in the Southern Region including Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Lundu, Bau, Tebedu, Simunjan and Asajaya.

For the safety and health of the people, SDMC said, NRP Phase 3 implementation for the Southern Region will be postponed until the number of cases show a satisfactory downward trend.

The Southern Region comprises the divisions of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian which include the districts of Lundu, Bau, Kuching, Serian, Tebedu, Samarahan, Simunjan and Asajaya. — DayakDaily
