KUCHING, Feb 19: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Tech Wan expressed her delight over the Cabinet decision to grant automatic Malaysian citizenship to foreign-born children by Malaysian mothers with foreign spouses.

In a statement today, she disclosed that in July 2022, she was disappointed with the Federal Court of Appeal’s decision which denied the automatic granting of citizenship to overseas-born children by Malaysian mothers with foreign spouses.

“I also supported other Women NGOs in calling for the amendment of the Federal Constitution where the word ā€œmotherā€ should be included in the 2nd Schedule, Part II, Section 1(b).

“This amendment will require two-thirds (2/3) support from Parliamentā€”I therefore, appeal to all our parliamentarians, regardless of their political affiliations, to support this much overdue amendment,” she said.

It was reported yesterday (Feb 18) by news portal Malay Mail that the Cabinet has agreed to amend the Federal Constitution to enable children born abroad to Malaysian mothers to gain automatic Malaysian citizenship.

The Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, together with Law and Institutional Reform Minister, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, made a joint announcement that the amendment is expected to be tabled during the current Dewan Rakyat sitting. ā€” DayakDaily
