KUCHING, June 19: Focus should be on issues faced by the public healthcare system instead of whether healthcare workers’ attire are inappropriate, says Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan.
In a statement today, Kho said over the years, there had been many incidents where members of the public were denied entry into government buildings due to dress code violations.
“In most cases, the issues were blown out of proportion, in my opinion. This time it was a Kuantan MP who raised concern over nurses’ uniforms; according to him, most of our country’s nurses are wearing uniforms that are ‘too tight’.
“It seems like dress codes continue to be raised as an issue either by politicians or public service agencies,” she said.
Recently, Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor from PAS called for a change in the dress code for nurses as he claimed that the current uniforms are “too tight and not Sharia-compliant”.
Kho added that while the ringgit is losing ground to the US dollar and Singapore dollar, she is appalled that the parliamentarian discussed the uniform of nurses instead of more pressing issues faced by the country.
“Please leave the nurses alone so they can focus on their primary roles, and let’s focus our attention on solving the ever-increasing crowd and congested public hospitals and clinics, increasing healthcare costs, and the increasing number of citizens with non-communicable diseases, including perhaps providing a more secure workplace and better welfare for our healthcare workers,” she added. — DayakDaily
