KUCHING, June 3: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch has pledged to strengthen its unity as the party begins early preparations with the aim to deliver all seven seats it will contest in during the 15th General Election (GE15).
In a statement today, SUPP Kuching Branch recognised that it is of utmost importance for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to win all 31 seats in the GE15 which is likely to be called soon.
“As the parliamentary election is fast approaching, Kuching Branch has embarked on its active preparation for one of the most challenging and important general elections.
“SUPP shall stay united and deliver all the seats to ensure that Sarawak is in good hands, especially to regain rights that have been eroded in pursuant to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“A strong GPS presence in Parliament is not only for political stability but also to act as a balancer at the Federal level,” the statement said.
Traditionally, SUPP has seven seats namely Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Sarikei, Sibu, Lanangn Miri and Serian (which is currently held by Dato Sri Richard Riot for seven terms since 1990).
While the nation is in the recovery phase after more than two years of living in Covid-19 pandemic, SUPP Kuching Branch is also concerned that the pace of economic recovery could be hampered by the increasing inflation rate and food shortages due to the tightening supply chain and the Russia-Ukraine war.
“The branch hopes that the State government can introduce more assistance packages to support our SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and the lower-income groups.”
Meanwhile, SUPP will be commemorating its 63rd anniversary with a flag raising ceremony at the party’s headquarters tomorrow (June 4).
Recalling its journey for the last six decades, SUPP Kuching Branch said the party has weathered many political turbulences, but despite the ups and downs, SUPP especially Kuching Branch, has always pledged to put the people’s interests at heart.
In the 2021 Sarawak Election, SUPP made a strong comeback by winning 13 seats (Batu Kawah, Batu Kitang, Kota Sentosa, Opar, Simanggang, Repok, Meradong, Piasau, Senadin, Bukit Assek, Pelawan and Pujut) and its president Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian being appointed the Deputy Premier. — DayakDaily
