KUCHING, Nov 9: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching branch members are calling for transparency, fairness, and a healthy election environment free from external interference and manipulation in tomorrow’s (Nov 10) branch election.
Affirming firm support for Kuching branch, Kapitan Lucas Yong condemned individuals using improper tactics to smear the branch leadership, spread rumours, and sow division for personal gain and power struggles.
“I regret that some challengers, who claim to advocate for change, are undermining the cohesion of the branch by using unethical means to mislead uninformed party members and outsiders. Such actions tarnish the image built by their predecessors,” he said in a media release today.
A party member for over 20 years, Yong had temporarily stepped away from the Kuching branch for career reasons.
However, he returned two years ago with a commitment to serve the people and has since witnessed significant progress, largely due to the infusion of fresh perspectives and energy from passionate young professionals.
“Under the current leadership, the Kuching branch has been nurturing a diverse group of young talents. Together, they are building the branch to fully prepare for future state elections,” he added.
Emphasising the importance of unity, Yong expressed hope that the senior leadership would continue to guide the branch towards success.
Jong Yean Pin, another dedicated SUPP member of over 20 years, called on members to unite, emphasising that continuity and stability in leadership are essential for long-term planning and strategic development.
“There’s a Chinese proverb that says, ‘One generation plants a tree; the next sits in its shade’. We must cherish and build upon the hard-earned achievements of our predecessors,” he stated.
Over the next three years, Jong is committed to contributing to both the party and the people of Sarawak, upholding SUPP’s mission with dedication and integrity.
He stressed the need for courage to face challenges and the importance of serving the people with integrity and justice.
Chai Mian Nyen, a candidate for the position of Women’s Wing chief, highlighted that loyalty to the party and a commitment to serving the people are the true responsibilities of party members.
She also recognised the growing role of women in various sectors, including national development, the green economy, new energy, and artificial intelligence (AI).
“These are not merely trends but responsibilities that the current times demand,” she said.
Nicholas Wung, a young member of the SUPP Kuching branch, announced his candidacy for the position of Youth Section leader.
“The branch has significant potential to empower politically ambitious youth. If elected, I will lead our new young team toward a more positive and progressive direction. All reforms must be carried out step by step, following our excellent traditions of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, trustworthiness, forgiveness, loyalty, filial piety, and brotherly love,” he said.
In a statement yesterday (Nov 8), the SUPP Kuching branch reiterated that all candidates would adhere strictly to the party’s election rules and regulations.
It emphasised that the election would aim to elect a united leadership team to continue contributing to the party and the people over the next three years.
The statement also noted that the Branch Election Committee had handled candidates’ nomination forms with flexibility and leniency.
Expressing regret over the involvement of external forces attempting to intervene for ulterior motives, SUPP Kuching called for party members to unite, reject misleading propaganda, oppose division, and respect the democratic process in the branch’s election. — DayakDaily
