KUCHING, July 19: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Central has endorsed calls for the integration of Sarawak Day’s full historical account into the school syllabus as a large portion of Malaysian, including many young Sarawakians, still lack understanding about the significance of commemorating July 22.

Its publicity and information secretary Adam Yii has urged the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) to include Sarawak Day’s history in the curriculum soon, emphasising that Sarawak’s unique history and culture are valuable assets that must be preserved.

“Understanding and respecting Sarawak’s cultural heritage and special status within the Federation of Malaysia is crucial.

“By incorporating Sarawak Day’s history into the school curriculum, we can ensure that the younger generation gains a better understanding of Sarawak’s past, thereby fostering historical recognition and pride,” he said in a statement today.

Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman, expressed the party’s full support for the suggestion made by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health and Housing Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil to integrate Sarawak Day’s history into both primary and secondary school curricula.

This issue, he stressed, also highlighted the importance of reclaiming educational autonomy for Sarawak to ensure that the education system reflects Sarawak’s special status and cater to the needs of Sarawakians.

“July 22, 1963, is a significant date in Sarawak’s history, marking the day Sarawak achieved self-governance. It deserves to be remembered and passed down through generations,” he added.

Additionally, Yii welcomed Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s announcement that starting in 2026, students from Chinese independent high schools with Unified Examination Certification (UEC) will be eligible for free tertiary education at Sarawak-owned universities.

“This initiative underscores the Sarawak government’s progressive stance and commitment to nurturing talent,” he said.

As part of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, Yii affirmed that SUPP will continue to advocate for education autonomy in Sarawak, ensuring that all Sarawakians, regardless of race or religion, have equal access to quality education through enlightened policies. — DayakDaily
