KUCHING, Aug 19: SUPP’s endorsed candidate for Opar Cr Niponi Undek and his team are now promoting GPS deep into the opposition-held constituency in an effort to win the seat in the coming state election.
As most of the voters in Opar are Bidayuhs of Bau-Jagoi, Selako and Lara sub-groups, Niponi, who is a Selako, has been able to reached out to them as he can speak all the Bidayuh dialects.
“We are making inroads in Opar with my team. And because I can speak the Bau-Jagoi and Lara dialects, it really helps me to reach out to the people and make them understand the struggle of GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) which is to bring development to the people,” Niponi told DayakDaily when contacted today.
After he was endorsed by SUPP as its candidate for the seat, Niponi has been moving on the ground to promote GPS to the people in Lundu and Bau.
When asked on his chances of winning the Opar seat, Niponi believed that GPS has the advantage as it is a formidable front as it is made up of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
“In order to win Opar, all the four component parties in GPS have to work as a team,” he emphasised.
As his next step, Niponi plans to visit larger villages such as Kampung Opar, Kampung Stengang and Kampung Selampit soon.
Yesterday, he and his team visited Kampung Sibiris along the Lundu-Sematan Road, where he met 50 party members to discuss the coming polls.
Accompanying him were Kampung Sibiris chief Selip Ambun, Cr Empan Jossay, Cr Henry Simon, SUPP Kampung Sibiris Women’s chief Sa’anah Aien, SUPP Opar Women’s chief Latak Kalop and other party leaders.
