KUCHING, Sept 7: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Lintang branch has expressed concerns over recent remarks by Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who indicated PDP’s intention to contest the Batu Lintang seat in the next Sarawak Election.

SUPP Batu Lintang youth chief Liew Leong Yee said in a statement that Wong’s remarks could jeopardise the unity of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

He accused PDP of violating the spirit of cooperation within GPS by openly declaring their interest in the Batu Lintang seat, which is traditionally contested by SUPP.

“I urge the GPS supreme council to address this issue before it escalates and threatens the coalition’s unity, potentially leading to internal crisis and tension,” Liew said.

He noted that Wong, who recently joined PDP, made it clear in an interview after attending a PDP Kota Sentosa branch event that his party intended to contest in the Batu Lintang constituency, which has long been represented by SUPP.

Liew called on PDP to clarify whether Wong’s statement reflects the party’s official position or merely his personal views.

He also emphasised that he is committed to defending SUPP’s right to contest the seat, given the party’s longstanding service to the grassroots.

SUPP has historically held the Batu Lintang constituency, and Liew argued that their continued representation is crucial to serving the people. — DayakDaily
