KUCHING, Feb 17: Good weather today drew thousands of visitors to the Sarawak-level Chinese New Year Open House 2026 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), boosting turnout compared to last year’s rain-affected event.
The open house welcomed an estimated 5,000 guests, including families, elders, and youth from across Sarawak.
Many arrived in colourful traditional attire, adding vibrancy to a hall adorned with festive decorations and cultural performances.

Sarawak Head of State (TYT) Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi graced the event and joined in the signature yee sang tossing alongside other State leaders.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the event reflects the importance of active community participation in Sarawak’s progress, quoting former US President John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
“We are proud that our Premier has always supported the State government’s initiative to hold open houses for celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, and Gawai Dayak.
“The open house which brings together people from different communities, demonstrates the value of cooperation and shared responsibility in building the State,” he told reporters after the event at BCCK, today.
The visual energy reflected Sarawak’s diversity, with every corner of the hall showcasing the State’s rich cultural tapestry, proving that celebration is not just about tradition, but also about bringing people together in colour, joy, and unity. — DayakDaily
