KUCHING, Apr 1: The Sungai Tujoh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex is in the final stages of its upgrade and is set to begin operations on May 1 to ease cross-border traffic and reduce congestion at Sarawak’s northern entry ahead of Hari Gawai and the holiday season.
According to TVS, ongoing works include modifications to the air-conditioning system, completion of electrical works in public restrooms and adjustments to immigration and customs counters to meet operational standards.
Minister of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the opening was timed to accommodate the expected influx of visitors during the festive period.
“Without the upgrade, traffic bottlenecks at the northern entry point could recur.
“The operation must start on May 1 to ensure smooth border movement as we approach Hari Gawai and the holiday season,” he said after inspecting the site in Miri today.
Lee added that close monitoring would continue to ensure the project meets specifications and is fully functional in time for the celebrations. — DayakDaily
