BETONG, Nov 14: A sun bear was rescued from a longhouse in “Ops Khazanah” in Spak here.

Marine Police Region 5 (W5) commander ACP Shamsol Kassim in a statement revealed they took part in a joint operation with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) to conduct an inspection at Rumah Kasa Ijok in Spak at 5.30pm yesterday.

“As a result of the inspection, it was found that a sun bear was being cared for by one of the villagers in the longhouse.

“However, no one came forward to claim to be the owner of the sun bear,” he disclosed.

The sun bear was confiscated under Sarawak’s Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998, as no permit or licence for keeping the animal was provided by anyone in the longhouse.

The bear was handed over to SFC for further investigation.
