SUKMA XXII facilities upgrades near completion, contingent registration opens for 37 sports

KUCHING, Jan 7: Selangor has upgraded 80 per cent of its sports facilities ahead of Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXII 2026 in August, said Selangor State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said the remaining 20 per cent of the upgrades are expected to be completed by April.
Najwan also announced that the Game Management System (GMS) is open for states to register their contingents from January 2 to February 13 while volunteer training programmes for SUKMA are expected to begin soon.

Speaking at the press conference during a visit in conjunction with the upcoming SUKMA 2026 at Baitulmakmur II in Petra Jaya today, he said; “The major upgrades are mainly at Shah Alam and the shooting range in Subang, which are the key facilities. Other facilities are already in good condition.”

He added that the opening ceremony will be held at the Sepang International Circuit, making it the first time in SUKMA history that it will not be held at a stadium.

For SUKMA 2026, Mohd Najwan confirmed there will be 37 sports and 474 events, with 474 medals up for grabs.

“For Para SUKMA, we have not finalised the details yet, as there are ongoing discussions with the Department of Youth and Sports (JBSN). Once the process is completed, we will announce the Para SUKMA details,” he said.

On international participation, he said Brunei will take part, while other countries have yet to submit official requests.

Meanwhile, Minister of Youth, Sports And Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah acknowledged the efforts of all Selangor delegates for visiting Sarawak to extend the invitation for SUKMA 2026.

At the handover ceremony, the symbolic handover marked the passing of responsibility and trust to Selangor as preparations continue towards the staging of a successful and inclusive SUKMA XXII, reinforcing the shared commitment of both states to youth and sports development at the national level

Also present were Deputy State Secretary of Selangor and SUKMA XXII chief executive officer Dato Mohd Yazid Sairi, Operations Officer Mohd Nizam Marjugi, Senior Secretary Mohd Akif Ruzaini Ab Ghofar, Operations Senior Director Mazurah Mohamed, and Sports and Events Director Ahmad Fahim Rosli. — DayakDaily
