Sukma 2024: Stephanie Ngu wins women’s jianshu event to secure Sarawak’s second gold medal

KUCHING, Aug 15: Wushu athlete Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern not only won her second gold medal at Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 but also delivered Sarawak’s second gold of the games.

The 20-year-old beat 13 other competitors to win gold with a score of 9.601 points in the women’s jianshu event at Sarawak Wushu Training Centre here today.

The silver medal went Melaka athlete Kelly Chin Sy Jie who secured a score of 9.603 while the bronze medal was scooped up by the Federal Territory’s Lee Cheng Wei with a score of 9.566.

Ngu who hails from Sibu has set her sights on another gold medal tomorrow in the women’s qiangshu event in what will be her last Sukma outing.

“I am mentally prepared this year. The wushu athletes from other states are very competitive and set high standards compared to the last Sukma.

“I hoped to deliver the third gold for Sarawak tomorrow,” she said when interviewed by reporters at the event venue.

She has already surpassed her performance at the previous Sukma two years ago, when she won two silver medals and one bronze medal in the same events. — DayakDaily
