KUCHING, June 13: The Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024 in Sarawak will be held from Aug 17 to 24, said Federal Minister of Youth and Sport Hannah Yeoh.
According to a news report by TVS, this announcement followed the agreement reached during the Malaysian Sports Supreme Committee (Sukma) meeting in Putrajaya yesterday (June 12).
Yeoh said that the meeting also confirmed that 37 sports will be contested.
“The 21st edition of the Games will be held in eight parts of Sarawak: Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri.
“This is to ensure that people throughout the State can experience the excitement of the Games.
“The only exception is the track bike event, which will be held in Peninsular Malaysia,” she said in a media statement issued yesterday.
The meeting was also attended by the Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Abdul Karim revealed that the meeting also addressed requests from seven sports to be included in Sukma 2024.
“The (result) of the meeting agreed to include five sports that had National Junior Championships, namely softball, cricket, chess, kabaddi and silambam.
“Sarawak as the host and the National Sports Council (MSN) have agreed to feature these sports in both Sukma 2024 and 2026,” he said.
However, Abdul Karim emphasised that all the mentioned sports must have participation from six States. — DayakDaily
