KUCHING, Nov 28: Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has urged the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) to buck up and expedite the redevelopment of Borneo Highlands Resort, emphasising that delays are no longer excusable.
He expressed his frustration over the lack of progress but stated that he could not do anything since the development of Borneo Highlands came under the purview of LCDA.
“Sudah berapa tahun tunggu? (How long have we waited?). Please don’t cite legal problems when it has already been settled. So do something about it (development of Borneo Highlands),” said Abdul Karim.
As the minister who oversees tourism and hospitality industries, Abdul Karim said that he would like to see Borneo Highlands prosper and experience development.
“I would love to see something moving and moving fast as far as Borneo Highlands is concerned.
“Not just Borneo Highlands, but any other tourism or hospitality industry that involves hotels and all that,” said Abdul Karim when met by reporters during the Borneo Highlands Glamping Festival 2.0 press conference today at the Mulu Meeting Room, Baitulmakmur II Building.
Borneo Highlands Resort was previously managed under a joint venture between LCDA and Country Heights Holdings Berhad. However, the Sarawak government terminated the concession in 2020 after the developer failed to meet project deadlines.
In 2023, the Federal Court dismissed an appeal by the previous developer, clearing the way for the Sarawak government to take full control of the land and proceed with redevelopment plans.
The proposed redevelopment master plan, pending approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA), includes refurbishing the existing clubhouse and golf course, as well as introducing new facilities such as hotels, a wellness centre, and a theme park.
The State government has also indicated its intention to involve private investors in revitalising the resort, aiming to transform it into a major tourism attraction. — DayakDaily
