KUCHING, Sept 25: A storm-damaged roof that left a classroom at SK Kenyalang vulnerable to leaks has been repaired, bringing back a safer and more comfortable learning environment for pupils and teachers.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the repair was completed following his earlier visit to the school to inspect the damage after strong winds in August blew off several roofing sheets.
“This is not only about repairing a roof. It concerns the safety of pupils and teachers. When we visited the school and saw the condition of the classroom, we knew that action had to be taken immediately,” he said when visiting the school today.
Wee, accompanied by MBKS Child Friendly Cities Initiative Committee chairman Cr Albert Tay and MBKS officers, found serious leakage in the classroom and immediately sought assistance to address the issue and restore a safe environment for pupils and teachers.
AMCAN Sdn Bhd sponsored the roofing materials, while Wan Li Wan Welding Works carried out the repairs under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, with Wee thanking both companies for their prompt assistance.
Although schools come under the federal government, Wee said MBKS would not disregard matters involving children’s safety simply because they fall outside the council’s direct responsibility.
The prompt action reflects MBKS’ commitment under its Child Friendly Cities Initiative Action Plan to improve safety in schools and public spaces.
Meanwhile, MBKS is studying the need and suitability of providing a zebra crossing near SK Kenyalang to improve the safety of pupils and parents crossing the road, particularly before and after school hours.
Wee said school safety should not stop at the school gate, but also cover roads and crossings nearby.
He added that MBKS would continue working with relevant parties to address issues affecting children and ensure their safety. — DayakDaily
