KUCHING, July 13: Let the collaboration between Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) component party, Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), and opposition Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) be an example for the upcoming six state elections in Peninsular Malaysia which will poll on Aug 12.
PDP deputy president Dato Henry Harry Jinep said the collaboration is for the unity and to enhance the well-being of the Sarawak people, in aligning with the “segulai sejalai” principle.
“The message is that, let the six states follow GPS,” he told reporters during a press conference after PDP Supreme Council Meeting and signing of the MoU held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur today.
Henry, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport Sarawak, emphasised that the two parties’ partnership indicates that the opposition has finally recognised GPS’ effectiveness in leading Sarawak towards becoming a developed State by 2030.
Earlier when asked if GPS will help Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the upcoming six state elections, PDP president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will make the announcement tomorrow (July 14) in Kuching.
Meanwhile, United Malays National Organisation (Umno) president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has on July 2 expressed hope that GPS leaders will assist the party in campaigning during the elections in Peninsular Malaysia in August.
Zahid, who is also the BN chairman, said he was confident the six states can learn from GPS’ experience in the in the Sarawak election which has led to stability in the region.
In response, Abang Johari had stated that he will need to discuss the matter with other leaders in GPS coalition, namely Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Sarawak (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and PDP, first on whether they would offer assistance for the state polls.
The six states that will be holding elections are Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan.
