KUCHING, March 1: Parents are encouraged to motivate their children to embrace STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects from an early age, as these fields are crucial for future job opportunities and Sarawak’s development.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Snowdan Lawan said when launching the Think & Tinker (T&T) Mini Lab Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) and STEM Carnival held at SK Pantu, Bandar Sri Aman earlier this week.
He emphasised that students who develop interests in these subjects will gain a competitive advantage in the job market, as the technological knowledge gained – particularly in science and technology – are key ingredients in engineering, research, innovation, and new inventions.
“Developing state like Sarawak needs more skilled human resources to make it a developed
state by 2030. We are in need of professionals like engineers, surveyors, technicians, consultants or even in aviation industry,” Snowdan, who is also TEGAS’ treasurer, said.
The lab and STEM Carnival for Pantu Zone is a collaboration between TEGAS and Pantu’s Headmasters Association Zone. It was coordinated by Pantu district’s SK Pantu and SK St Leo Gayau.
This is also the first time the lab is held in the Sri Aman division.
Amongst the exhibits at the carnival were the 3D Printing, drone, digital technology learning, robotics, Mobile Apps, coding technology like Scratch and Arduino and many more.
Ten primary schools in Pantu Districts participated in this lab and STEM Carnival.
Other strategic partners participating in the exhibitions were Jabatan Kimia Malaysia Negeri Sarawak, Planetarium Sultan Iskandar (PSI), Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Sarawak Biodiversity Centre.
The main objectives of this lab is to cultivate students’ interest in science, mathematics, and technology, ultimately contributing to the growth of a skilled and professional workforce in Sarawak.
Present also were headmasters and teachers from various schools involve in the lab community leaders, and students exhibiting their projects. – DayakDaily
