KUCHING, Dec 6: Journalists must uphold professionalism and avoid sensational reporting as errors in today’s fast-paced, AI-driven media landscape can quickly damage reputations, says Malaysian Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Seri Tiong King Sing.

“The work of the media today is not easy. Make a small mistake, you get criticised. If a report is inaccurate, you also get criticised.

“That is why I urge all news coverage to be accurate and correct,” he said during the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) Christmas Dinner held at a local hotel in Sibu yesterday, as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman, further warned against chasing “spicy” news, stressing that the media plays a crucial role in supporting government efforts to boost economic development, including the tourism sector, which is now among the fastest-growing globally.

At the event, Tiong announced RM30,000 contribution in support for SJA activities, handed out incentives to 40 veteran journalists, and launched a flight ticket subsidy for members under the theme ‘Let’s Travel, SJA Media Friends’.

Also present were Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker and Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, SJA chairwoman Florence Nervyn and event organising chairman Akun Giman. – DayakDaily
