STAR challenges SUPP lawmakers to table independence referendum

KUCHING, Nov 11: Sarawakian lawmakers should table the independence referendum in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN).

State Reform Party Sarawak (STAR) president Lina Soo is amused that Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) should continue to ask the prime minister and federal government to allow Sarawakians to have a referendum to decide whether to stay or opt out of the Federation.

She said the Sarawak DUN is also Sarawak parliament, and is empowered to pass laws and enact legislation for the good of the ‘rakyat’ it represents.

“We start with our assemblyman who are democratically elected, and allow them to vote on the motion for an independence referendum in line with the peoples’ aspiration to have the right to vote to decide our own political future.

“Then we can see how many assemblymen will support it, and voters in the coming Sarawak state election (PRN12) have the option to vote out those who will not support the motion,” she said in a statement today.

Soo reminded SUPP that the party has seven representatives in DUN where all it needs is two assemblyman – a proposer and seconder – to table a motion in the legislative house for a Sarawak Independence Referendum Ordinance (SIRO).

Soo said if this is done on a legitimate and constitutional platform in a peaceful and democratic manner, it is all above board and within international law.

“No more excuses, Sarawakians now are well-informed and can see through politicians who serve the ‘rakyat’ or who serve their own interests.

“Politicians who truly serve the rakyat are those who listen to the voices of the Sarawak people, and then bring the voices before DUN for a solution,” she said.— DayakDaily
