KUCHING, Jan 29: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has called on Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) to immediately refund victims of a scam carried out by its own officers at the Kuching branch, saying the bank’s current stance is “unreasonable and irresponsible.”
The scam, which came to light at the end of 2025, involved a BSN officer tasked with promoting the bank’s investment products. The officer, along with several colleagues, allegedly took money from more than 70 customers, totalling RM11 million, and issued fake investment receipts, all from within the BSN office.
“BSN, as a bank, is responsible for the actions of its staff, especially since this fraud occurred inside its own offices.
“It is BSN’s duty to reimburse customers who were cheated by its employees,” Chong said during the debate on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address in Parliament today.
He criticised the bank for refusing refunds to some victims, citing that certain funds came from cash kept at home, which BSN considers a “suspicious source of funds.”
“If money kept at home is considered problematic, let the police investigate it separately. It is not reasonable for BSN to use that as an excuse to deny refunds to its customers,” Chong added.
He urged the federal government, as the owner of BSN, to direct the bank to immediately refund all victims of the scam, emphasising the need for accountability and fairness for affected customers. – DayakDaily
