KUCHING, Jan 8: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has criticised the inefficiency and bureaucracy of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Kuching in handling the issuance of trade plates.

His remarks followed a local news report highlighting complaints from Sarawak car dealers unable to conduct test drives or transport unregistered vehicles for inspections due to delays in the issuance of trade plates by JPJ Sarawak.

ā€œAs it stands, shipments of cars have arrived at Kuching Port, but due to these delays and inefficiencies, more than a thousand cars are stuck at the port,ā€ he claimed in a statement today.

Chong, who is also the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman, revealed that he had contacted Malaysiaā€™s Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, regarding the matter.

ā€œThe minister has directed the Chief Secretary of the Ministry to take immediate action to resolve the issue,ā€ he said.

Trade plate licences are essential for car dealers and importers to transport unregistered vehicles from ports to workshops, showrooms, or warehouses. Without these licences, car dealers or forwarding companies cannot move the vehicles from the port to designated locations.

Chong expressed regret over the situation, noting that while the Madani government is striving to reform and enhance the efficiency of government systems, certain elements within the system appear to sabotage these efforts, causing unnecessary inconvenience and hardship.

ā€œIn this case, we are fortunate to have a responsive and hands-on minister who acts swiftly when such bureaucratic hurdles arise.

“I hope this issue can be resolved within a day or two. Anyone facing similar problems may also contact me for assistance,ā€ he added. ā€” DayakDaily
