KUCHING, Oct 15: A family from the Stampin Resettlement Scheme was left shocked after receiving an unexpected RM1,750 water bill, a drastic increase from their usual monthly charge of under RM50.
Unable to understand the sudden spike, the family sought assistance from Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, explaining that their water usage had not changed and that they could not afford to pay such a large sum.
Upon learning of their predicament, Yap immediately contacted the relevant authorities to investigate the matter and determine whether the unusually high bill resulted from a technical error, faulty meter reading, or underground leakage.
He assured that he would follow up with the Kuching Water Board (KWB) to ensure the issue is resolved fairly and that the family is not unfairly burdened.
“No family should be made to suffer due to administrative or technical mistakes,” Yap said. “A sudden jump in essential utility bills can cause tremendous anxiety for those living on limited means.”
Yap also pledged to continue advocating for greater responsiveness and accountability among government agencies to ensure fair treatment for consumers.
He reminded residents to promptly check with the relevant authorities if they receive unusually high bills and assured that his service centre is always ready to assist.
In addition, Yap urged KWB to strengthen its communication and customer support systems to make it easier for consumers to file complaints and receive timely clarification.
“Many families in the Stampin Resettlement Scheme live modestly and manage every ringgit carefully. When sudden and unexplained bills occur, it creates unnecessary hardship and worry. Agencies must be sensitive to this reality,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
