KUCHING, Oct 28: St Peter’s Church in Padungan still requires RM12 million to complete its construction, with the new estimated completion date set for Nov 15, 2024.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, stated that the total cost of the church project is RM38 million, and to date, RM26 million has been raised.
“We are still short of RM12 million so we appeal to everyone to help and support the shortfall of another RM12 million to complete the church.
“The building is almost ready for occupancy, so we urgently need the RM12 million to help pay for the construction,” he told reporters after presenting a RM1 million contribution from UNIFOR at the church’s project site on Jalan Central Timur, Padungan here, today.
Dr Sim, who also serves as Sarawak’s Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG), noted that the new church features intricate stained glass created by Italian artisans Roberto Fasoli and Ernesto Reducci.
Among the highlights are 22 stained-glass panels depicting pivotal moments in the life of Jesus Christ, known as the Stations of the Cross. Some stained-glass pieces incorporate local Dayak motifs, adding a unique cultural touch.
“The church will not only be a place of worship but also a special site for tourism, offering a sanctuary for peace, healing, and reflection,” he added.
Meanwhile, St Peter’s Church Rector, Reverend Father Vincent Chin, shared updates on upcoming facilities, including digital organs, a bell, and air conditioning.
“According to the contract, the project was set for completion this month, but we’ve been granted a brief extension.
“By November 15, we aim to have everything in place for inspection by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and to apply to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) for a temporary Occupation Permit (OP).
“We hope to hold the first Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Afterwards, we’ll continue enhancing the space as needed,” he said, mentioning that the church’s official opening is scheduled for June 29, 2025, at 7pm.
