MIRI, April 29: Hosting sporting events can become a powerful tourism attraction for Miri city, opined mayor Adam Yii.

“Hence, events such as Northern Borneo Trophy Charity Golf 2019 is much welcomed here,” he said at the prize-presentation ceremony at Eastwood Valley and Country Club, here, yesterday. His text-of-speech was read out by his deputy, Julaihi Mohamad.

Yii thanked the organiser, Johor Golf Tourism Association, for choosing Miri as their location for this inaugural event.

“I believe sporting events can have a major effect on Miri’s tourism sector. In addition, there are many attractions in Miri to explore,” he said.

The tournament, which was supported by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), was organised to raise funds for SMK Agama Miri.

Thirty amateur players from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, including Miri, participated in the tournament, which was divided into the individual and team categories.

In the individual category, the winner was Hadi Aris, who beat 10 competitors. In the team category, it was won by the team comprising Soliment Ngian Zaidi Adrus, Rosley Hobden and Mohd Shahrizan Abdullah.

Also present at the ceremony was SMK Agama Miri’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) patron Datuk Ahmad Lai Bujang. —DayakDaily
