KUCHING, June 9: There are abundant opportunities for graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as individuals with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) qualifications, says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.
As such, Yap encouraged youths, especially SPM graduates, to pursue STEM and TVET courses in response to the labour market’s growing demand for skills in the digital and green economies.
“This (demand from developing the digital and green economies) means that Sarawak will need more engineers and information technology (IT) specialists in the process of transforming our economy,” said Yap when officiating at a seminar for youths to explore life career skills today.
He added that Sarawak will need many technicians and a skilled workforce, particularly in downstream industries.
“The GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak)-led Sarawak government’s free tertiary education policy in 2026 will prioritise courses that meet the needs of the (region’s) job market,” Yap said.
“This is to ensure that Sarawakian graduates will have a high employability rate”.
Yap congratulated Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) Kota Sentosa for organising the youth seminar, as many students are still uncertain about their options after SPM.
During the event, Yap handed over a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM5,000 to Saberkas Kota Sentosa to support them in organising more community, training, welfare, and charity events. — DayakDaily
