KUCHING, Oct 24: Beginning Jan 1, 2026, the Speed Limitation Device (SLD)— a mandatory safety feature for commercial vehicles in Malaysia—will be extended to vehicles built before Jan 1, 2015.
In a statement, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian said with the SLD, the maximum speed of these vehicles will be limited to 90 km/h, ensuring safer operation on roads and highways.
“To ensure full adherence to this rule, LPKP Sarawak will require all commercial vehicles which fall under the Phase 1 category to submit their certification slip evidencing the installation of the SLD as a supporting document when applying for licences from LPK Sarawak,” he said.
The policy, first implemented on Oct 1 this year, is being carried out in phases. Currently, the SLD requirement applies to commercial vehicles built after Oct 1, 2015, specifically express buses and goods vehicles with a BDM exceeding 3,500kg.
“However, we understand that there are many who have yet to install SLD because of technical issues or the lack of a qualified body to attend to the certification.
“For such cases, LPKP Sarawak will only be granting licences valid for one one-year duration instead of the usual years for vehicles that have yet to install the SLD.
“On top of that, LPKP Sarawak’s licences will be conditional, requiring the licensees to provide proof of installation before their next renewal,” he said.
Kong added that this step is taken to ensure compliance and to gradually move towards full enforcement of SLD installation across all applicable commercial vehicles.
“LPKP Sarawak prioritises the safety of road users and remains committed to working closely with JPJ Sarawak and other enforcement agencies to maintain high safety standards while balancing the operational needs of industry players,” he said. — DayakDaily
