KUCHING, Feb 27: A special session of Parliament will convene on March 2 (Monday) to determine which candidate commands the majority support from members of Parliament (MPs) as the next prime minister.

Interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad informed that if the House fails to arrive at a decision, then there will be a snap elections,” he told a news conference after unveiling the 2020 Economic Stimulus Package in Bangunan Perdana, Putrajaya today.

Dr Mahathir revealed that this was the outcome of his meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara today (Feb 27) as the King could not identify a candidate with a simple majority to be appointed as the next prime minister.

“The King interviewed all 222 MPs in the last two days to find somebody with a distinct majority, yet there isn’t any.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong said that the right forum to decide will be the Parliament. The Dewan Rakyat will be called on March 2, 2020 in order to determine who has the support to be the next prime minister,” he said.

He added that he would accept whoever commands the majority as the prime minister.

“I will not be the prime minister if I’m not named as a candidate,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also did not discount the possibility of Bersatu nominating its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister candidate.

“There are various possibilities that we discussed including the possibility that Muhyiddin might become the prime minister candidate.

“If everybody chooses him (during the special Dewan Rakyat sitting that will convene on Mar 2), then I am okay,” he added.

Dr Mahathir also confirmed that he is back as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman, after resigning from the post on Monday (Feb 24).— DayakDaily
