SPA: AI technologies can help deter border intrusion by illegals

Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) secretary David Hii Chin Loung.

KUCHING, Jan 21: Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable surveillance systems can help to address the illegal immigrants issues at the state’s border, suggest Sarawak Patriot Association (SPA).

It’s secretary David Xavier Hii Chin Loung, in a statement, today said with the complex challenges of monitoring the border, the usage of the latest technology, which includes AI, will greatly assist the monitoring where human participation is limited to a certain extent.

“The AI-enabled surveillance towers can also be built at “hotspot” areas, which can process surveillance images from the border more effectively and efficiently with greater accuracy if compared with human beings. There are even some sensors which can detect “human footsteps”,” he said.

Yii said this in response to the recent talks by the Sarawak Government to strengthen its border security to prevent illegal border crossing between Sarawak and Kalimantan.

The Sarawak government is proposing to put in place short-term, medium-term and long-term measures to address this issue, and one of the proposals were to build fences or walls at strategic locations along the 1,032 kilometer state’s border

On the same note, Hii suggested the usage of surveillance drones can also be used for monitoring as they can scan a land area within a 30-kilometer radius which can cover a lot of ground.

“Apart from that, biometrics technology such as facial recognition can also be used to identify illegals which will lead to a faster arrest,” he added. –DayakDaily.
