Social gathering cluster Jalan Muhibbah in Betong swells to 118

KUCHING, March 2: Social gathering cluster, Jalan Muhibbah in Betong, has swelled to 118 cases after 49 out of 159 people were confirmed to have contracted Covid-19.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in a statement today, revealed that 2,043 individuals have been screened as of today whereby 1,509 tested negative while 416 are awaiting lab test results.

The cluster originated from a private gathering at a house at Jalan Muhibbah in Betong on Feb 10 and was declared on Feb 23 after registering 18 cases.


The index case is Case 7,407, a 50-year-old man who tested positive on Feb 16 after developing symptoms on Feb 14.

As the Sekubong Cluster in Sebauh officially ended today with no new cases reported in the past 28 days, there are presently 25 active clusters remaining in Sarawak.

Apart from Jalan Muhibbah, there were two other clusters in Kuching which recorded an increase in daily infections today namely the funeral cluster Emperoh Jambu with five cases and Valentine’s Day cluster Jalan Green with one case.

For Emperoh Jambu Cluster which stemmed from a funeral at a village in Padawan, the addition of five new cases thus pushed the cumulative number of cases in the cluster to 171.

As of today, a total of 818 individuals have been screened whereby 489 tested negative and 158 are awaiting test results.

With infections from the cluster identified in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian districts, Kampung Emperoh Jambu is currently still under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) until March 8.

Meanwhile, the Jalan Green Cluster picked up one case from Samarahan today, pushing its tally to 25 cases.

As of today, a total of 280 individuals have been screened whereby 255 tested negative, with no lab test results pending.

The Jalan Green Cluster was announced after two index cases detained by police after a tussle over a woman tested positive for Covid-19 on Feb 14. This also led to more than 130 police personnel placed under quarantine after more people tested positive in a matter of days.

The state’s remaining 22 clusters did not record any new cases today. These clusters are Buloh in Selangau; Univista and Jalan Ho Pin in Samarahan; Bintang Daily and Sungai Bakong in Meradong; Kejatau and Sebangkoi in Sri Aman; Jan Yong in Kapit; Geronggang and Mas Merah in Sibu; Kampung Sungai Maong and Indah Riang in Kuching; Kidurong Dua and Jun Heng in Bintulu; Nanga Lijan in Julau; Seruas in Beluru; Jalan Pengiran in Matu; Tabong in Bau; Rakut and Jelita in Miri, Gelong in Kapit; as well as the prolific Pasai in Sibu and its sub-cluster Tangap in Subis.

Meanwhile, Sarawak reported 159 new Covid-19 cases today with Sibu topping the list of daily infections with 52 cases followed by Betong (49), Kuching (18), Bintulu (15), Miri (9), Sarikei (5), Dalat and Samarahan (3 each) and Sri Aman, Bukit Mabong, Marudi, Tatau and Subis (1 each).

This thus increased the state’s tally to 9,924 cases. — DayakDaily
