KUCHING, July 22: As Sarawak commemorated its 60th year of independence today, social activist Peter John Jaban led a small flash mob near the Museum Garden to urge swift and resolute actions from the Sarawak government and relevant authorities to safeguard the rights and status of the native people.
“Many natives of Sarawak applying for citizenship often endure lengthy waiting periods, and their applications may even be rejected or stalled somewhere in the system.
“I feel that is not right, and we need a thorough check on how such issues persist in our system,” he told reporters.
Peter John emphasised the importance of reviewing and amending the Sarawak law, ensuring transparency, and treating all individuals equally and fairly, particularly to safeguard the rights of Sarawakians, especially the natives.
Therefore, he called on the authorities to address the plight of many native applicants awaiting their citizenship documents.
“Even these genuine applicants are being compelled to apply for native status, despite having one or even parents who are natives here,” he pointed out.
If this is not addressed and resolved amicably, Peter John said more people would express their disagreement on the matter. — DayakDaily
