KUCHING, Aug 11: Social activist Peter John Jaban has filed an RM500,000 defamation suit against a retired teacher claiming to be an activist from an unregistered organisation.
In a press statement today, Peter said he is also seeking a public apology over the publication in the said person’s Facebook post beginning July 24, 2023, containing serious allegations and defamatory content.
He also said that the Letter of Demand sent by law firm A. Winston Kaya & Company Advocate, acting on his behalf, demanded an apology on Facebook and a local newspaper for three consecutive days and to pay the demanded sum as damages within seven days (starting Aug 10).
According to the firm, the statement, which was published on Facebook, had caused tremendous damage to Peter’s public reputation.
“Our client is therefore constrained to file this suit before the expiry of 14 days from the date of the letter of demand to protect his good name, reputation and professional standing,” it said.
Since July 2023, Peter has come under fire from netizens over the statement published on Facebook, which is linked to several local non-governmental organisation (NGO) groups. – DayakDaily
