KUCHING, Aug 3: SMK Sri Sadong in Simunjan has received a major RM28.73 million redevelopment involving the construction of new classrooms, science labs, workshops and teachers’ quarters to improve education infrastructure in rural Sarawak.
The upgraded facilities include an academic block with 12 classrooms, a special education room (PPKI), science and computer laboratories, electrical/electronic and manufacturing workshops, a canteen and five Class F teachers’ quarters.
The project, which commenced on March 17, 2022, was implemented conventionally by appointed contractor Welfield Services Sdn Bhd under the supervision of the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia through Project Implementation Team 2 (PPK2).
Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who witnessed the handover ceremony today, said SMK Sri Sadong is the only school out of 38 listed for redevelopment under the rural schools upgrading programme in Sarawak to be fully completed without major delays.
“I thank the contractor and Project Implementation Team 2 for ensuring the smooth delivery of this project.
“This shows what good coordination between the Works Ministry (KKR), JKR and the Education Ministry (KPM) can achieve,” he told reporters after the event. An audio recording of his remarks was later shared with DayakDaily.
Nanta emphasised that such efforts are crucial in bridging the education gap between urban and rural areas under the Madani government’s agenda.
“This is a clear sign that the government is serious about uplifting rural Sarawakians so they are not left behind. It’s not just about infrastructure, but about the long-term future of our children,” he said.
He revealed that out of 76 school projects planned in Sarawak, 26 have been completed, 30 are still under construction, while 20 are in the planning stage. — DayakDaily
