KUCHING, Oct 11: SMK Chung Hua has received a RM50,000 government allocation to support its continued development and educational facilities, announced during the school’s 110th anniversary dinner at a hotel in Sibu on Saturday (Oct 10).

In a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the allocation was announced on behalf of Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing at the  anniversary dinner.

Beyond financial assistance, he highlighted the challenges facing educators as ongoing changes to syllabuses, teaching methods and learning materials require teachers to devote more time and effort to adapting their approaches.

“Faced with a constantly changing teaching environment, teachers have to devote more time and effort to adapting to new teaching methods, while also making adjustments according to students’ learning needs,” he said in a speech delivered by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry press secretary Ross Sia Wan Teng.

The Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman said schools, parents and alumni should provide greater understanding and support for teachers as they navigate these changes, while continuing to recognise their contributions to education.

He also highlighted the importance of digital literacy, saying students needed more than access to information to navigate the digital era effectively.

Tiong said schools and families shared the responsibility of nurturing a generation capable of distinguishing right from wrong, respecting others and taking responsibility for their decisions.

Meanwhile, he called on school alumni associations to expand their roles beyond organising reunions and become active links connecting schools with communities and different industries.

“Alumni come from various fields, each with their own expertise and abilities.

“As the saying goes, those who have wealth should contribute financially, while those who have the ability should contribute their effort,” he said.

Tiong said school development should not depend entirely on the government and school authorities, urging alumni and community members to contribute according to their respective means and capabilities.

“We cannot leave all the responsibility to the government and assume that school development should be borne entirely by the government and school authorities,” he said.

He added that active participation from alumni and the wider community was important to sustaining school development and creating a more conducive learning environment for students.

Also present were Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Chung Hua School Board chairman Robert Chew Swee Hiong, Chung Hua Alumni Association chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew and Chinese community leader Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming. —DayakDaily
