SIBU, April 2: Improvements of basic infrastructure namely roads and drains are among the agenda of the new Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) team.
The newly reappointed chairman Clarence Ting said the council would also need to focus on cleanliness and hygiene in Sibu as the public have grown more conscious and demand for cleaner toilets in food outlets after the pandemic.
“We also need to take stringent actions against those who continue to discharge unfiltered waste water into the drains that cause blockages.
“In addition, we need to focus on town beautification, making the trees and plants more uniform and neater,” he said at the SMC swearing-in ceremony for the 2023-2025 term here today.
On issues like road congestion which he had planned to expand Jalan Wawasan and Jalan Aman, Ting said the council would discuss these matters during the committee meetings.
“In Sibu, we are on the verge of exciting renewal. The Sarawak government plans to rebuild Bukit Assek. This will totally transform Sibu downtown,” he said.
He further urged councillors to step up the plates as they have big tasks ahead in the next two years.
“We have only one goal and that is to make Sibu a better place for everyone to live,” he added.
Ting also called on his councillors to prioritise on service to the public regardless of their political parties, races or religions.
“I would also like to stress the importance of personal integrity serving as a councillor. That means as a councillor, we should not have personal interest in the contracts in the council that we serve in. Only this way, we can have the confidence of the public in us to deal with public issues without any self-interest,” he emphasised.
