SMC chairman: Please respect design, refrain from cruel comments on Christmas Tree Decoration Contest entry

The Christmas tree in question which has gone viral on social media for its unique design.

SIBU, Dec 10: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting is calling on netizens and the general public to respect the design of an entry in the Christmas Tree Decoration Contest, which has drawn some criticism online for its unique look.

Photos of the tree have gone viral on social media, where netizens commented that it resembled a large funeral wreath due to the arrangement and shape of the flower blooms on it.

Ting has since urged the public to respect the design of the tree instead of passing such judgement.

The school which entered the tree in the contest had put in a lot of work into the design and used sustainable materials as their decoration for the Christmas tree.

“I don’t like to address this thing on the internet, on Facebook, and social media but there are some people who talk about the particular design and whatnot. This design comes from different organisations and in this case, it was the school.

“I think we should all respect the design and I think the public should refrain from passing judgment on them because these are school students who put in a lot of work to signify their Christmas spirit.

“Let not trample on our Christmas spirit, let’s enjoy this Christmas,” he said after officiating the lighting up of the giant Christmas tree and the eight Christmas trees at the town square last night.

The eight Christmas trees for the Christmas Tree Decoration Contest organised by SMC were entered by schools and churches in the town.

They include Zion Methodist Church, Catholic High School, Sacred Heart Cathedral, University of Technology Sarawak, Xin Fu Yuan Methodist, SMK Methodist, SM Wong Nai Siong, and SMK Kampung Nangka.

Ting said he was proud of the work put in by the contestants for their various tree designs.

“I am so proud of the schools that can do this with their Christmas trees. I invite the public to come and take a photo with all the trees as well as enjoy yourself and I want to wish everybody in Sibu a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” he said.

Ting also welcomed the public to participate in the New Year Countdown 2023 on Dec 31 at the town square. — DayakDaily
