SMA urged to improve existing telco tower connectivity in Jalan Jambu

KUCHING, July 17: Political secretary to the Chief Minister Tan Kai has urged Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to consider upgrading or improving the network connectivity of the existing telco towers at Jalan Jambu, near Sg Maong here, instead of erecting a new tower.

The residents, he said, have sought help from Penghulu Gian Ann Kee and Councillor Mok Chuan Ping to stop the construction of a new telco tower as the authority did not respond to their request even after staging a protest last week.

“So today, I along with SMA officers have gone down to the site to see and hear the plight of local residents,” he said in a press release today.

“Having discussed with local residents, they are of the view that the existing three towers within a one kilometre radius are sufficient to provide mobile (network) coverage for the surrounding neighbourhoods,” he explained.

As such, Tan emphasised that local residents felt it was not necessary to build a new telco tower as the mobile network reception and signals were already very strong at present.

“So I have asked the SMA to hold off the construction activities on site until we can find an amicable solution. I will inform the Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) about this,” he added. — DayakDaily
