MIRI, Feb 11: Residents around SK Tudan have been urged to avoid playing firecrackers, especially ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration, and to refrain from any open burning activities, as a gas leak detected at the school’s construction site on Feb 6 remains under investigation.

Authorities have also advised the public to comply with all safety instructions to minimise risks.

The precautionary measures were taken to ensure public safety while relevant authorities continue their investigations.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that upon receiving the report, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 Miri, and other related agencies were immediately mobilised to monitor the situation and conduct initial investigations.

He also visited the site and attended the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) coordination meeting to ensure that all necessary actions were carried out in a unified and timely manner.

“The gas samples have been sent to the Malaysian Chemical Department Laboratory, Bintulu Branch for further analysis.

“Both pile holes that emitted gas have been covered with canvas, and a worker has been stationed at the construction site for safety purposes. No injuries have been reported, and the situation is under control,” he said in a media statement on Monday.

As a precaution, all construction work has been halted, and the project site has been fully closed until the Sarawak Minerals and Geosciences Department (JMG) completes its investigation.

The JMG conducted further assessments on Feb 9 to determine the exact gas capacity detected.

Meanwhile, Lee explained that class sessions at SK Tudan will continue as usual, but activities near the construction site should be avoided to minimise any risks.

“The Sarawak government and relevant authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety remains a top priority,” he added. — DayakDaily
