KUCHING, Jan 9: A temporary single-lane diversion will be opened to the public at 6pm today to facilitate smoother traffic flow following a road shoulder collapse caused by a landslide at Jalan Batu Kitang.
Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak director Datu Ir Dr Cassidy Morris conducted a site visit to the affected area to assess the situation and oversee immediate mitigation measures.
In a statement today, he said JKR Sarawak will carry out repair works as soon as possible to ensure the safety and comfort of road users, while advising motorists to drive cautiously and comply with the traffic signage in place.
Earlier today, Sarawak Water reported that a 1,050mm main pipeline ruptured near the Jalan Haji Baki traffic light following the landslide, leading to low water pressure and water supply disruptions in parts of Kuching.
Sarawak Water explained that the incident was caused by a burst pipeline which resulted in soil erosion and the loss of ground support beneath the affected road, compromising its structural stability.
As a result, consumers in several areas, including Petra Jaya, Kota Samarahan and Padawan, experienced low water pressure and unscheduled water supply interruptions.
Sarawak Water said it promptly implemented emergency measures to minimise water loss and stabilise system pressure, with repair works to commence once site conditions are deemed safe.
The utility added that it is working closely with relevant authorities and technical agencies to ensure repair and reinstatement works are carried out safely, effectively and as quickly as possible to restore normal water supply and ensure public safety. — DayakDaily
