KUCHING, June 19: Eligibility criteria for Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS) have been expanded to include young single persons above 18-years-old.
According to Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, RM48 million has been allocated for this scheme which provides a RM200 subsidy per month for up to three years.
“The scheme committee so far has approved RM1,786 applications, amounting to RM10 million,” said Dr Sim in a short video clip shared on his Facebook page.
“In order to expand the assistance to more people, I have instructed (sic) and expanded the eligibility criteria to include young people, single, above 18-years-old with an income of less than RM2,500 (per month).
“Hopefully with the expanded criteria, we can help more people in their rental (payments) in towns like Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri, to assist them with (to address) high cost of living,” said Dr Sim who is also Deputy Sarawak Premier.
He explained the scheme was introduced in 2021 with the aim of helping low income families to battle the high cost of living.
Prior to this announcement, among other criteria, applicants were required to be 21-years-old and above, married or a single parent with at least one child living with them.
