KUCHING, July 17: A team of Singapore International Volunteers (SIVs) comprising experienced teacher trainers will work closely with 100 primary school teachers in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian to improve their skills in teaching Mathematics.
The project is implemented under the newly-launched Mathematics Pedagogical Learning, Understanding and Support (Maths PLUS) project organised by Singapore International Foundation (SIF) in partnership with Sarawak’s Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD).
It is supported by the Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) and the Institute of Teacher Education Batu Lintang Campus (IPGK), and co-sponsored by Ngee Ann Development Pte Ltd.
According to a media release by SIF, the project will be implemented over the next four years.
“To maximise the scalability and sustainability of the project’s impact, 20 Malaysian teachers will be selected to become master trainers to impart their knowledge and train fellow educators in their communities.
“Through a series of workshops and symposia, the educators will enhance their teaching techniques to create more engaging and interesting Mathematics lessons to raise student understanding and performance in the subject.
“A study visit to Singapore will also be arranged, to facilitate valuable networking, and foster the exchange of effective teaching practices between Malaysian and Singaporean teachers,” it said.
Additionally, the project will introduce Structured Sharing Sessions (SSS) as a support system, providing a platform for Sarawak teachers to convene regularly. These sessions will facilitate the sharing of newly acquired knowledge and experiences among teachers, supporting mutual learning and professional growth.
SIF chairman Janadas Devan said the foundation has worked closely with its partners and friends in Malaysia on projects in various areas such as education, youth leadership, the arts and social entrepreneurship.
“This project (Maths PLUS) is expected to benefit more than 80,000 students in Sarawak by 2027,” he said.
The Maths PLUS project was launched by Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn at Teacher Education Institute (IPG) Batu Lintang Campus here today.
Others in attendance included Deputy Minister of Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, SIF Division Director (Programmes) Jaryll Chan, JPNS director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad, MEITD permanent secretary Azmi Bujang, and IPG Rajang Campus director Yahya Sedik. — DayakDaily
