SIBU, Aug 28: The Yayasan Sarawak International School (YSIS) construction project in Sibu is on track to be completed by December, with 84 per cent of the work already completed.
In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn stated that the project’s progress will continue to be closely monitored, covering all aspects, including the permit acquisition process and other safety considerations.
He added that while YSIS is designed to accommodate approximately 500 students, the government plans to admit over 100 students in the first intake by 2026, following the model implemented in Kuching and Petra Jaya.
“A 50 per cent quota will be allocated to students from the lower (B40) income group, 40 per cent to the middle (M40) income group, and the remaining 10 per cent will be reserved for students from the top (T20) group,” he said.
Sagah made these remarks during a media briefing after a working visit to the YSIS construction site on Monday (Aug 26).
He also clarified that while English will be given significant emphasis in the curriculum, Bahasa Malaysia will continue to be taught, with history being a compulsory subject.
“While we are emphasising English, it doesn’t mean we are neglecting Bahasa Malaysia. Additionally, history will remain a mandatory subject,” he said.
Also in attendance were the Deputy Minister of Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry Adana Jed, Borneo Development Corporation (BDC) chief executive officer Nor-E-Fadzwine Salleh, and Yayasan Sarawak deputy director (Operations) Mohamad Adzlie Ibrahim. — DayakDaily
