KUCHING, Feb 19: Sarawak’s rich culture, particularly Sibu’s unique heritage, has strong potential to attract tourists if promoted more systematically, says Federal Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
He said this in a Facebook post today following the Chinese New Year open house held at Pulau Li Hua in Sibu, which drew more than 20,000 visitors on the third day of the festivities.
“Sarawak boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage, and Sibu, in particular, has its own distinctive cultural identity. With systematic promotion, these can become major selling points to attract both domestic and international tourists,” he said.
Tiong added that he would continue engaging with relevant agencies in Sarawak following the celebration.
“I have also urged Tourism Malaysia to be more proactive and to strengthen cooperation with all state governments to promote Malaysia, making local festivals and unique attractions key highlights for drawing tourists,” he said.
He noted that festive events could transform cultural celebrations into income-generating opportunities, benefiting hawkers, eateries and local businesses.
The open house saw thousands of people thronging the riverside venue, creating a lively atmosphere filled with festive colours, music and performances.
Visitors were treated to a wide selection of local delicacies, including Ding Bian Hu, kampua mee, laksa and beef noodles.
Tiong expressed appreciation to the public for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to serve the community.
He further wished everyone good health and prosperity in the Year of the Horse. — DayakDaily
