SIBU, July 6: The cleanliness level of food premises in Sibu remains unsatisfactory and it reflects poorly on the town’s image.
Highlighting this, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting acknowledged that many premise owners lack awareness regarding this issue.
“Many of our food premises are still dirty. The cleanliness of each food premises is an important aspect of Sibu’s image. SMC is now actively working towards making Sibu a clean town,” he said at the Waste to Wealth, Tree Planting programme and Climbathon event at Taman Jubilee Bukit Aup today.
Ting emphasised that if the current situation persists, the Council’s mission will not be achieved.
“The local business environment forms the first impression for outsiders visiting Sibu,” he added.
He urged council members and community leaders to take this matter seriously through the Resident Councillorship System (RCS).
He explained that the RCS, implemented according to councillors’ zones in collaboration with community leaders, aims to educate and raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness in food premises.
Ting called on RCS to play a significant role in educating the community about garbage management, environmental cleanliness, and the proper care of pet dogs within residential areas.
“RCS is expected to be a catalyst for us to succeed in our mission. We need the local community’s support to help the Council address these issues,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, the programme organising committee chairperson, councillor Michelle Law, mentioned that the programme aligned with the guidelines of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It aims to foster closer relationships between residents, community leaders, and local councils.
“We hope it will increase community involvement and participation in local council governance,” she said.
The event was also attended by deputy chairman councillor Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, secretary Yong Ing Chu and other council members. — DayakDaily
